Dr Samantha May

Dr. Samantha May is an accomplished Specialist Sport & Exercise Physician with a unique focus on female athlete health (RED-S), concussion management, running injuries, osteoarthritis, and tendinopathy. She brings a wealth of expertise to her roles as Head Doctor for the Melbourne Vixens Netball Club at the Victorian Institute of Sport, Team Doctor for the Australian Diamonds, Head Doctor to the AFL Umpires, and consultant for the Essendon Football Club’s AFLW team.

 

With extensive experience across elite sports, including AFL/AFLW, cricket, athletics, gymnastics, hockey, sailing, rowing, and tennis, Dr. May is a trusted expert in sports medicine. She completed her specialist training through the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Medicine in 2024 and earned a Master of Applied Science (Research) from La Trobe University, focusing on “Ultrasound Measurement of Gastrocnemius Muscle Architecture in Athletes.” She holds a Bachelor of Medicine, Surgery, and Advanced Medical Science from The University of Melbourne (2013), a Diploma in Sports Medicine from the International Olympic Committee (2016), and a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Management of Pain from The University of Edinburgh (2015).

 

Dr. May conducts comprehensive assessments to provide accurate diagnoses and identify underlying causes or risk factors, helping to minimise the chance of recurrence. She arranges investigations as needed, from blood tests and ECGs to x-rays and advanced imaging, including rebateable MRI scans. Treatment plans are tailored to each individual’s specific needs and limitations, and where additional allied health or specialist advice is beneficial, she facilitates prompt referrals to trusted practitioners.
