Michelle Tanner

Senior Physiotherapist, Aquatic and Physiolates Instructor

Michelle graduated from the Lincoln Institute of Health Science, School of Physiotherapy in 1986 and has built a career grounded in long-term patient relationships and a deep understanding of how the body adapts across the decades.

Her clinical interests sit at the intersection of sporting injuries — particularly in swimmers, and tennis players, where she has particular expertise — low back and spinal pain, rheumatology, and rehabilitation after orthopaedic surgery. A keen tennis player herself, Michelle plays locally and has a strong understanding of the technical and load demands that come with the sport.

Michelle completed her DMA Clinical Pilates certification in 2024 and leads several of our Physiolates group sessions per week: therapeutic Pilates-based exercise designed to bridge one-on-one physiotherapy and ongoing supervised pilates rehabilitation. Her Monday Aquatic Physiotherapy (hydrotherapy) sessions provide a low-impact rehabilitation environment that suits people with arthritis, post-surgical recovery, persistent back pain, or balance concerns.

Many of her long-term patients describe her as both technically excellent and genuinely warm — qualities that have kept her in the same field of practice for nearly four decades.

Frequently Asked Questions About Michelle

Physiolates is a therapeutic Pilates-based exercise program led by physiotherapists. Classes are small, individually tailored, and grounded in your physiotherapy assessment. Unlike a regular Pilates class, every exercise is selected (and modified) by a physiotherapist based on what your body actually needs.

Hydrotherapy works well for people with arthritis, post-surgical recovery, persistent back pain, balance and falls concerns, and any condition where land-based exercise is difficult. Michelle leads our Monday hydrotherapy sessions and can advise whether it suits your needs.

Michelle's approach combines hands-on assessment with active rehabilitation. The goal isn't just to ease symptoms but to give you the strength, control, and confidence to keep doing what you love — usually through a combination of treatment, targeted exercise, and Physiolates or hydrotherapy if appropriate.

Yes. Swimming and gymnastics injuries are one of Michelle's deepest areas of clinical interest. With over 35 years of experience in these populations, she understands the technical demands of each sport and can support you through both rehab and return to training.

Yes. Michelle plays tennis locally herself and has a strong clinical interest in treating tennis players.
