Physiotherapy FAQs
Yes. We see eligible patients under both Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) referrals and GP Chronic Condition Management Plans (GPCCMP). DVA patients need a valid referral, and GPCCMP patients need a current plan and referral from their GP.
Yes — it is the new name and updated Medicare framework for what many people previously knew as EPC or CDM physiotherapy referrals. The GP Chronic Condition Management Plan replaced the old GP Management Plan and Team Care Arrangement system from 1 July 2025. Patients who already had the older arrangements in place before that date can continue to access eligible allied health services under transition rules until 30 June 2027.
A GP may refer you for up to 5 Medicare-subsidised allied health services per calendar year under a GPCCMP. These sessions attract a Medicare rebate, but they do not usually cover the full appointment fee, so a gap payment commonly applies.
Under DVA’s treatment cycle arrangements, a referral is valid for up to 12 sessions or 1 year, whichever comes first. After that, ongoing treatment can continue if the patient’s GP decides further treatment cycles are clinically necessary.
Physiotherapy can help manage a wide range of conditions affecting mobility, pain and function. This may include musculoskeletal conditions, balance issues, strength and mobility problems, chronic pain, neurological presentations and rehabilitation to support independence and quality of life. Under a GPCCMP, allied health services are intended for people with a chronic or terminal medical condition where coordinated care is appropriate.
No. Private health insurance cannot be used for the same service at the same time as a Medicare rebate. If you attend under a GPCCMP, the session is processed through Medicare and any remaining amount is paid as an out-of-pocket gap. Medicare and private health cannot be claimed together for that same appointment.
