Neck Pain

Neck Pain Treatment in Sunbury & Gisborne

Checking your blind spot. Sitting through a work day. Getting a full night’s sleep without waking stiff. Neck pain makes ordinary things hard — and because it often comes with headaches, shoulder pain, jjaw tension or arm symptoms, it can be difficult to know where the problem actually starts.

That’s exactly what a physiotherapy assessment untangles. Neck pain is highly treatable, and most people improve well with a combination of hands-on treatment, specific exercise and a few practical changes to how they work and move.

What causes neck pain?

  • Sustained postures — long hours at a desk, on devices, or driving
  • A sudden movement or awkward night’s sleep (wry neck)
  • Road or sporting accidents (whiplash)
  • Joint and disc irritation that can refer pain into the head, shoulder blade or arm
  • Stress and muscle tension — the neck and shoulders are where many of us carry it

What actually helps neck pain

Clinical practice guidelines support a combination of manual therapy and specific exercise for neck pain — particularly strengthening the deep neck and shoulder blade muscles — alongside education and staying active (Blanpied et al., JOSPT Neck Pain Clinical Practice Guidelines, 2017). Neck collars and prolonged rest are rarely helpful.

Because headaches, dizziness and jaw pain can all have a neck component, your assessment looks at the full picture. Our team includes physiotherapists with advanced training in headache and vestibular conditions — useful when it’s not obvious whether the neck is the culprit.

When to get help promptly

See your GP or physiotherapist promptly if neck pain follows significant trauma, or comes with progressive arm weakness, clumsiness in your hands, difficulty walking, or constant unremitting pain. These are uncommon, but they warrant medical review.

There's no single best pillow. The right one keeps your neck in a comfortable, neutral position for your sleeping style. Your physiotherapist can give individual guidance — and will usually look at the bigger contributors too, like strength and daytime posture habits.

Most people improve significantly in the first two to three months. Early assessment, reassurance and guided movement give you the best chance of a smooth recovery.
