Knee Pain Treatment in Sunbury & Gisborne
Whether it’s a sudden twist on the netball court or footy oval, a knee that aches on stairs, or arthritis that’s slowly shrinking your walks, knee pain changes how you move through your week. It’s also one of the areas where good physiotherapy makes the biggest difference — because the knee responds so well to strength.
What causes knee pain?
- Sudden injuries — twisting, landing, changing direction (ligament and meniscus injuries)
- Training load changes — more running, hills or jumping than the knee is conditioned for
- Kneecap (patellofemoral) pain from strength and movement-control factors
- Osteoarthritis — which is about the whole joint, not simply “wear and tear”
- Recovery after surgery — ACL reconstruction, meniscus surgery, knee replacement

What actually helps knee pain
Strength is the common thread. For knee osteoarthritis, exercise and education are the first-line treatment recommended by Australian guidelines — structured programmes have been shown to reduce pain and improve function (Skou & Roos, 2017; RACGP Knee OA Guideline, 2018).
For sporting knees, rehabilitation is progressive and criteria-based: you move to the next stage when your strength, control and confidence are ready, not just when the calendar says so. Our rehabilitation gym, Physiolates and aquatic physiotherapy give you the environments to do that work properly. Many meniscal tears — particularly degenerative ones — do well without surgery.
When to get help promptly
Get assessed promptly if your knee gave way with a pop and swelled within hours, locks or won’t straighten, can’t take weight, or is hot, swollen and accompanied by fever. Early diagnosis of ligament injuries makes planning your recovery much easier.
Your first appointment
Expect a detailed assessment of your knee, hip and movement patterns, a clear explanation of the diagnosis, and a plan matched to your goals — whether that’s returning to sport or walking the Macedon Ranges trails comfortably. More detail: What to expect at your first appointment.

No — the opposite. Research consistently shows appropriate exercise reduces arthritic knee pain and improves function. The key is the right type and dose, built up gradually, which is exactly what a physiotherapist provides.
Not always. Many meniscal tears, especially degenerative ones, improve with structured rehabilitation. Your physiotherapist will assess your knee and work with your GP or surgeon if a surgical opinion is warranted.
Return to sport after ACL reconstruction typically takes 9 to 12 months, guided by strength and performance testing rather than time alone. Rushing this stage is the biggest avoidable risk factor for re-injury.
Yes. Scan findings don't determine your outcome — strength, weight management and activity levels have a major influence on pain and function, even in advanced osteoarthritis. Exercise-based care is recommended at every stage.
