Back Pain

Back Pain Treatment in Sunbury & Gisborne

Back pain has a way of creeping into everything — how you sit at work, whether you pick up your kids, how you sleep, and whether you trust your body at the gym or on the golf course. If your back is limiting what you can do, you don’t have to wait it out and hope.

Back pain is the most common musculoskeletal problem we see, and one of the most treatable. Around four in five Australians will experience it at some point in their lives. The reassuring part: most back pain is not caused by serious damage, and it responds well to the right assessment, movement and strength work.

What causes back pain?

There’s rarely a single cause. Back pain usually reflects a combination of factors:

  • A sudden strain — lifting, twisting, gardening, sport
  • Gradual overload from sitting, driving or repetitive work
  • Reduced strength and fitness after illness, injury or a busy season of life
  • Irritation of spinal discs, joints or nerves
  • Stress, poor sleep and general health — these turn the volume up on pain

Your physiotherapist’s job is to work out which factors are driving your pain, because that determines the plan.

What actually helps back pain

The research here is clear, and it has changed a lot in the past decade. Staying active is definitely better than bed rest. Movement and progressive strength work outperform passive treatment alone.

Most people do not need a scan — many findings on X-rays and MRIs are normal age-related changes that appear just as often in people with no pain at all (Hartvigsen et al., The Lancet, 2018; Australian Low Back Pain Clinical Care Standard, 2022).

Your treatment plan may include hands-on therapy to settle pain and restore movement, an individualised strengthening programme, and practical guidance on work, lifting and flare-up management. For many people, that progresses into and individualised regular exercise programme such as Physiolates, Fit for Life or Aquatic Physiotherapy to build lasting strength and confidence.

When to get help promptly

Most back pain settles with the right management. See your GP or physiotherapist promptly if your back pain comes with numbness around the saddle region, changes to bladder or bowel control, progressive leg weakness, fever, or unexplained weight loss — these are uncommon, but they need medical review.

Your first appointment

Your physiotherapist will take time to understand your history, assess your movement, and explain what’s going on in plain English. You’ll leave with a clear plan and something you can start doing about it that day. More detail: What to expect at your first appointment.

No. In most cases imaging isn't needed to diagnose or treat back pain, and research shows scan findings often don't match symptoms. Your physiotherapist will refer you for imaging if there's a specific clinical reason.

Keep moving within comfortable limits. Research consistently shows staying active leads to a better recovery than bed rest. Your physiotherapist will show you which movements to modify and which to keep.

Yes. Long-standing pain usually needs a more structured, graded approach than recent pain, but it responds to the same principles: understanding your pain, rebuilding strength and returning to the activities that matter to you.

No — you can book directly with a physiotherapist. A referral is only needed for EPC/GPCCMP and  DVA

It depends on how long you've had the pain and your goals. Your physiotherapist will map out a treatment plan at your first appointment and review it with you as you progress.
